In this video we revisit the idea of the cut shell. In a previous video we tested the cut shell against ballistic gelatin and found that it did not meet the FBI penetration requirements for defensive use. A few of you guys pointed out that it may do better if we tried using buckshot instead of birdshot.

In this test we used standard 00 reduced recoil buckshot to make our cut shell. We fired the shell out of the Remington 870 shotgun from fifteen feet.

Upon hitting the gelatin the shell performed just as designed. At three inches we saw a permanent cavity of two inches and the separation of the shot from the casing. The shot traveled along a conical path of expansion which would have been incredibly effective against a soft target.

Overall the cut shell mad with buckshot fared much better than its previous birdshot brother. I would not recommend this for defensive use, because standard slugs are reasonably priced and readily available. This may also cause pressure changes in the load which can cause injury.
