September’s screening is especially notable because two of the panelists are also the main subjects of the documentary. In Our Son’s Name tells the story of Orlando and Phyllis Rodriquez whose son Greg perished in the attacks. Amid a national environment of anger, strong calls for revenge, and the rush to war, these two grieving parents stood up for peace, forgiveness, and compassion toward our enemies. They strongly opposed the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the death penalty of avowed 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and even befriended his mother. They spoke against suspicion and violence directed toward innocent Muslims. In seeking to understand the causes and consequences of violence they began to work with violent inmates at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Also appearing on the panel will be Reverend Ron Lemmert, former chaplain at Sing Sing. Orlando and Phyllis Rodriquez will discuss their experiences and what’s happened since the film was released.
In Our Son's Name is a moving portrait of resilience, courage, and the healing power of reconciliation. Insightful interviews, verité footage, and striking archival images create a subtle, profound story told with disarming candor – a response to violence that challenges conventional concepts of justice and healing. As Shadd Maruna, Dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University said after a recent screening, “None of us could help but be moved, even transformed, by Phyllis and Orlando's remarkable courage and dignity.”
